Flags Up! No Kings!
Flags Up! No Kings!

About this event
Saturday, June 14th (Flag Day), let us honor the true spirit of America: a nation where power belongs to the people, not to any single individual. Here in Ames, we invite all who cherish 'liberty and justice for ALL' to gather with us. Together, our voices will rise to defend our democracy and the enduring promise of freedom.
Join Indivisible Ames and Democracy Every Day for this vital community observance! To help share our patriotic spirit, we'll have free American flags for participants (limited numbers, so please come early to our main gathering!).
If you wish to Volunteer please contact IndivisibleAmes@proton.me
We are uniting as part of the "No Kings" Nationwide Day of Defiance to send an unmistakable message:
- No one is above the law.
- We demand accountability and cherish the rule of law.
- We will not stand idly by while our hard-won democratic freedoms – freedoms for everyone – are undermined.
Here's what we're planning at Roosevelt Park (10:00 AM - 11:30 AM):
- Gather & Connect (10:00 AM): Meet us at Roosevelt Park for our main Flag Day morning gathering.
- Inspiring Speakers (Lineup TBD): Hear from passionate local voices and community leaders who are dedicated to protecting our democracy and advancing justice.
- Susan Benner
- Immigration Advocate
- (More speakers to be announced!)
Optional Activity Following the Main Gathering:
- Flags Up! Mobile Sign Brigade (After Main Rally): For those who wish to continue making our voices visible, an informal Mobile Sign Brigade will head out along Grand Ave. after our main program concludes. This is a great, energetic way to take our "Flags Up! No Kings!" message further into the community. Participation is optional – join if you're able!
Why This Matters Right Now:
Our democratic republic, and the freedoms it promises, are not spectator sports; they require our active participation and unwavering defense from all of us. This Flag Day, let's demonstrate our collective strength, our resolve, and our commitment to a future where everyone's rights are protected, every voice matters, and the promise of American liberty is made real for all.
RSVP now to join Indivisible Ames and Democracy Every Day for "Flags Up! No Kings!" Be part of this crucial national day of action and let's send a clear message: No Kings in America!
Guidelines for Rally Participants
Our Approach: Be Respectful & Effective
Remember, a message delivered respectfully and without confrontation has the best chance of being heard. Always be polite and respectful, even to those who might disagree or try to engage negatively. Do not engage in arguments. If someone yells at you from traffic, remember Michelle Obama's advice: "When they go low, we go high."*
Safety First: Stick Together & Stay Aware
Never participate alone. For safety, always ensure you are with at least one other person. If you find yourself alone, call a friend to join you or return another day. Trust your instincts. If any interaction makes you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, disengage immediately, leave the area, and call the police if needed.
Location & Conduct: Be Safe & Legal
Stay on public sidewalks or within the park. This is vital for everyone's safety (yours and drivers'), ensures pedestrians can pass (step into the park grass to let them by), and keeps us on legal public property. Public property includes sidewalks, the grassy area between the street and sidewalk (right-of-way), and city parks. Do not enter private property. Keep yourself and your signs out of the street. Do not stand in the road or wave signs into traffic lanes.*
